Fernandina Beach PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk

July 27, 2021

GERD and hip fracture. We often comment that everything in the body is linked. Here is another scenario. The discomfort for patients with reflux (aka GERD) drives them to seek help. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are often prescribed for many Fernandina Beach reflux sufferers. Sadly, these PPIs may trigger pain elsewhere, especially the hip for which the risk of fracture is increased, despite the fact that they help with GERD. Your Fernandina Beach chiropractor closely monitors our patients who develop hip pain, particularly if they are taking PPIs, as often chiropractic treatment helps ease hip pain.

PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is higher in PPI users. Whether users utilize a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is greater while those taking a high dose were at even greater risk for hip fracture. Researchers caution that doctors and patients must realize this in order to be cautious in prescribing PPI use for a long period of time and be cautious in knowing what the appropriate usage of PPIs is so that they do not take it without a full understanding of the need for such use. (1) Researchers in the latest study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk made it very clear: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They open their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is contestable which set them on a course to see for themselves. They found participants who were over age 40 and had been prescribed PPIs for at least 90 days. They then checked on any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. Their study revealed that fractures developed more often in PPI users than in those who didn't use PPI and that fracture risk associated with PPI use rose with duration of use. (2) Averting hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN

Fernandina Beach hip pain sufferers find relief with chiropractic care. As Dr. Robert Hayden described in a new Prevention magazine article, chiropractic patients who looked for care for spine, hip or shoulder pain said they had less pain after 4 months than those who visited a medical doctor…and the cost of care was less! (3,4) Hip pain is a common complaint heard in the chiropractic practice, especially in patients over 60 years of age. Manual therapy treatments, spinal manipulation (especially gentle Cox® Technic), exercise, electrotherapy and such are common ways to treat and relieve hip pain. Amelia Chiropractic Clinic will set up the proper approach to care for your Fernandina Beach hip pain!
