Could a Plant Compound Assist Protect Your Spine Discs?

July 29, 2026

If you've ever coped with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs matter to your daily ease of movement and mobility. Now, encouraging new research is looking at a plant-based compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to delay disc degeneration at the cellular level.

WHAT IS QUERCETIN?

Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may specifically support the health of your spinal discs.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND

The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin preserves nucleus pulposus cells — the shock-absorbing cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural shock absorbers. (1) Researchers discovered that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammation pathway and improving a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. In everyday terms, this helps disc cells eliminate worn components and perform better, which may help postpone the degeneration process.

The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a unique view. (2) Using advanced genetic analysis, researchers determined that fibrosis — a kind of fibrous buildup — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a significant part in disc degeneration. They discovered that quercetin shows promise as an anti-scarring agent, meaning it may help prevent this scarring process from worsening.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS

While more research is needed before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings add to a expanding body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can contribute a helpful role alongside conservative, non-surgical spine care like chiropractic treatment. At Amelia Chiropractic Clinic, we believe in a comprehensive approach to spinal health — combining hands-on chiropractic care with lifestyle factors that support your body's innate healing.
